‘B’ teams fill most of A-list boys soccer All-Metro

TOP HONORS: Byrd’s Andrew Stuart won Player of the Year and Bossier’s Orlando Medellin was the Coach of the Year on the SBJ All-Metro soccer team.

Schools with names started with the letter B – Benton, Bossier and Byrd – are prominently featured on the 2021-22 boys soccer All-Metro team, chosen by the Shreveport-Bossier Journal.

The three schools, district champions with a combined 17-0 record in league play, picked up seven of the 11 spots on the team.

Byrd forward Andrew Stuart, who led the Yellow Jackets to the District 1, Division I title, is the Player of the Year. He won a tight battle for that honor with Benton’s Logan Smith.

Smith and the Tigers reached the state quarterfinals in Division II as a No. 6 seed and a 15-8-2 overall record.

“That’s a tough call,” a local coach said. “You couldn’t go wrong either way.”

Bossier coach Orlando Medellin, who led the Bearkats to a District 1-3A title and a No. 4 seed in the Division III playoffs, is the Coach of the Year. After finishing second in the district to Loyola in his first four years as coach, Medellin and the Bearkats broke through this year to win the crown. Bossier was 19-3-3 overall and made it to the state semifinals for the first time in program history.

“It wasn’t that long ago Bossier was an automatic win whenever you played them,” said one local coach. “Not any more. His teams play hard and he has done a tremendous job.”

Stuart is one of three Yellow Jackets chosen to the first team. Benton had two and Bossier had two. Parkway, Loyola, Captain Shreve and Caddo Magnet each had one selection.
