Libraries are invaluable resources for students, but for those who do not have a library card, accessing all of the many resources available may be a bit challenging. However, at Shreve Memorial Library, students have the option to use the library’s resources without having a physical library card. Shreve Memorial Library’s virtual student library cards make it easier for students to get the materials and resources they need to succeed during the school year. Virtual student library cards are available for all Caddo Parish Public School students and allow students to use their Student ID number to check out books and materials from the library.
Shreve Memorial Library began offering virtual student library cards during the 2018/2019 school year in partnership with Caddo Parish Public Schools. In the first year, 6400 students used the virtual cards to use library computers, online resources, and to check out 5,774 physical items from the library. Since then card usage has increased steadily, with a substantial increase since the pandemic closures with 32% of all Caddo Parish Public School students using a virtual student library card in the 2020/2021 school year.
Virtual student library cards provide access to library materials and resources to all students, grades Pre-K through 12th grade, in Caddo Parish Public Schools. The virtual student library cards allow students to access all of the library’s online, digital resources. Students can use the virtual student library cards to access research materials through the Louisiana State Library Databases, get free online tutoring and homework help with Homework Louisiana, and download eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and video through Hoopla, Overdrive and Libby.
In addition, students can use the virtual student library cards at any of Shreve Memorial Library’s 21 branch locations, located throughout Caddo Parish. The virtual student library cards can be used to check out up to two physical items at any given time and to use the library’s computers and free Wi-Fi.
Students do not have to sign up for the virtual student library cards as the virtual cards are linked to their Student ID numbers. Students can request their virtual library card number and PIN when visiting a Shreve Memorial Library branch or online at http://www.shreve-lib.org.
