As the new federal administration begins to implement initiatives, including federal grant funding freeze implemented by the Department of Government Efficiency, families that rely Head Start programs and the workers in the classrooms are waiting to see what impact these initiatives will have on them.
Though there was an initial hitch in their payment system, an official with some of the Bossier Parish Head Start Early Childhood Education locations said that issues were resolved the same day.
However, the deputy director of the National Head Start Association (NHSA) indicated earlier this week that this situation contains a lot of flux but they are closely monitoring it, revealing that some of the directives they have received have been contradictory.
NHSA’s Tommy Sheridan says that while many federal payments are distributed to states, funding for Head Start is actually paid directly to the communities the programs support.
“So some communities have access to other types of resources or some are large grant recipients or large programs like school districts, city government, county government,” Sheridan said. “Some are single-purpose non-profits and I think in a lot of communities, especially in really rural communities, and those where they have the much smaller programs, that’s where we’re really concerned about.”
The fate of this funding may well hinge on a lawsuit that has been jointly filed by attorneys general in several states. However, if Congress chooses to act to support the funding cuts, then difficult decisions on educational resources and programs like these will become part of the discussion.
“Again, we’re hopeful and it does appear as if the administration is working through this backlog and we’re very hopeful that this will get addressed today, tomorrow, and we don’t have to have these types of conversations any further. At the end of the day again, this is Head Start, (and it) provides such critical services to so many children and families across this country, and it’s something that Democrats and Republicans have long supported,” Sheridan said.
