CROWLEY — Landon Fontenot pitched six shutout innings to lead Calvary to a 3-1 win over Notre Dame Thursday night at Miller Stadium in the first game of a best-of-three quarterfinal series in the LHSAA Select Division III baseball playoffs.

Fontenot allowed six hits, walked one and struck out 10 for the Cavaliers, now 27-10. The Pioneers’ biggest threat came in the fifth inning when they loaded the bases with a couple of singles and a hit batsman. Fontenot was able to get a groundout to halt the Pios.

Calvary broke a scoreless deadlock with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Hutch Grace led off with a single and Kyzer Smith followed with a double. Jackson Tedder knocked in Grace with a single up the middle and after a couple of strikeouts, the Cavs got their second run on an error to lead 2-0.

Tedder doubled in Smith for an insurance run in the sixth, building a 3-0 lead going to the seventh.

Notre Dame (26-6) got its only run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk, but Smith struck out the final batter to end the game.

The Cavaliers finished the night knocking eight hits with Tedder (2-for-3) and Jackson Legg (2-for-4) getting a pair each.
