Captain Shreve picked up a non-district win defeating St. Mary’s 5-2 at home for its 20th win on the season Wednesday.

The Gators got out to a 3-0 lead through the first four innings when the visiting Tigers scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 3-2. Shreve got those two runs back in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the win to improve to 20-11.

St. Mary’s pitcher Payne Williams limited Shreve to six hits but the Gators took advantage of their scoring opportunities.

Christopher Peyton doubled in the first run for Captain Shreve scoring Jorden Green. Andrew Sharp singled home Peyton as the hosts took a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Shreve increased the lead to 3-0 when Jackson Bleich brought Green in with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Both of the Gators’ runs in the fifth inning were scored on a fielding error.

Rhyson Carroway got the win in relief of Bryce Lopez as both pitchers combined to limit St. Mary’s to six hits, two earned runs as they walked six and struck out 10. It is the Gators’ first 20-win season since they finished 34-6 in 2018.

Captain Shreve (20-11, 7-4) gets back to District 1-5A action today by visiting Airline (13-15, 7-5) in the first game of a two-game series.

The big game of the day in the district will have leader Benton (18-13, 10-2) hosting second-place Parkway (19-7, 8-4) in the first of their two-game series.

Other 1-5A games have Natchitoches Central (23-7, 5-6) coming to Shreveport to face Byrd (19-12, 6-6) and Haughton (17-11, 4-8) playing at Southwood (3-24, 0-12).

In District 1-4A, today’s Northwood (22-7, 5-1) at Evangel (9-18, 5-1) game now has new meaning because Minden (17-10) handed North DeSoto (23-6, 6-1) its only district loss of the season with an 8-7 win in Stonewall Wednesday. The winner of today’s Northwood-Evangel game will finish tied with the Griffins for first and will be district co-champions.

District 1-2A has league champion Calvary (21-9, 9-0) on the road to Farmerville to play D’Arbonne Woods (10-15, 3-6) and Lakeside (15-13, 3-6) traveling to Vivian to face North Caddo (11-13, 4-5).
