Early Minden surge too much for Woodlawn

The winner of this Friday matchup had the opportunity to keep its playoff hopes alive, and the Minden Tide left Independence Stadium with a 43-20 win over Woodlawn.

An early Woodlawn (3-7, 2-5 District 1-4A) score was wiped out by a penalty, and Minden took to the air from there to build an insurmountable lead.

The Tide scored the game’s first 30 points helped by two of Cameron Mitchell’s three touchdowns. Mitchell started with a 19-yard catch from quarterback Jakobe Jackson before adding two scoring runs.

“That was a turning point tonight,” said Woodlawn coach Thed Harris of the score eliminated by penalty, of which Woodlawn committed 12. “It’s tough to get this close to a playoff opportunity and fall short. But we weren’t in this position last year, so it’s something we can definitely learn from. But it doesn’t take the sting away.”

Woodlawn entered the matchup sitting at No. 25 in the Division II Select bracket, one spot out of the 24-team playoff.

Minden (4-6, 3-4 District 1-4A) had a higher mountain to climb at Division II Non-Select No. 33 to reach the 28-team postseason, and the win at least keep the Tide afloat momentarily as they attempt to make up nearly a full power rating point.

The Tide finished the regular season with two wins against BTW and Woodlawn.

Minden took to the ground to tune of 292 yards led by Daylen Robinson’s 143.

Woodlawn quarterback Donovan Reliford provided two late touchdowns, a 5-yard pass to Josh Dotson and a 10-yard run.

Brandon Henderson supplied Woodlawn’s first touchdown, a 5-yard run, late in the third quarter to put the Knights on the board.
