Evangel ‘bakes the cake’ in rout of Minden

By ROY LANG III, Journal Sports

MINDEN — Evangel head coach Denny Duron called it. But seven days later may have been a little quicker than even he imagined.

“We’re going to play really well one night,” Duron said following a Week 7 loss at North DeSoto. “When we translate that to the field that night, it’s going to be special for the Eagles. We haven’t done that yet. The cake’s not baked until it’s baked.”

Friday, the Eagles rolled into Minden for the first time in school history and emerged from The Pit with a dominant 48-21 victory in what was also the first matchup between the north Louisiana programs.

Evangel quarterback Peyton Fulghum unleashed five touchdown passes – two of more than 70 yards (both to Brayden Curry) – and piled up 368 passing yards as his team moved to 4-4 (3-2 in District 1-4A).

“This was the night it clicked,” Fulghum told the Journal. “We’ve had three great weeks of practice, but we were having trouble translating it to the games.”

Rosetta Stone couldn’t have done a better job translating on this night.

Peyton completed 20 of 27 passing attempts Friday, while his twin, Parker, hauled in 12 passes for 132 yards and two scores. Curry totaled a whopping 193 yards on just three catches – all touchdowns – to help the Eagles snap a two-game slide.

“Curry was so wide open on the 73-yarder,” Peyton Fulghum said. “I got him, but I put it out there for him and it was pretty.”

The game was tied at 14 late in the second quarter before Fulgham and Curry got cooking. In less than an 11-minute span, the two connected for touchdowns of 73, 75 and 45 yards to push Evangel’s lead to 35-14 with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Minden (2-6, 1-4) was led by a 119-yard rushing performance from Daylen Robinson and two touchdown runs from Jakobe Jackson.

Evangel heads home for the first time since Week 1 to face Huntington next week.
