Falcons get ‘uncomfortable’ win over Crimson Tide

PRACTICE PROBLEMS: Northwood’s Austin Brown saw his concerns return Friday night in a 21-12 win over Minden. (File photo by JOHN JAMES MARSHALL, Journal Sports)

Northwood head coach Austin Brown told his team all week that it was getting too comfortable. Two wins in a row seemed to make the Falcons lose their edge.

In fact, they were getting so comfortable that Brown did something coaches rarely do – they put the pads on for Thursday’s practice.

When Northwood opened with a 14-0 lead in the first quarter against Minden Friday night at Jerry Burton Stadium, Brown sensed that once again, the Falcons were getting too comfortable.

Once the Crimson Tide answered with 12 points in the third quarter, Northwood got decidedly less comfortable.

“We just can’t seem to put a team away,” Brown said. “I guess they are just trying to test my blood pressure.”

But the Falcons knew where they could go to turn that around. “That’s when the Q White Show took over,” he said.

As he has done numerous times this year, running back Quintavion White dominated the fourth quarter and it was his score on a short run that led the way to a 21-12 win over Minden in a District 1-4A game.

The Falcons came out with a fast tempo to start the game and it seemed to pay off. “We put it on them to start and I guess we thought we were going to run away with it,” Brown said.

A White run and a quarterback sneak by Mason Welch got Northwood the early lead, but the Falcons seemed to shut it down after that.

“We let off the gas and Minden, to their credit, took it to us in the second half,” Brown said. “Minden is a big team and they are fast and athletic. We just didn’t tackle very well.”

The Falcons (5-2, 3-1) will travel to Leonard C. Barnes Stadium to take on Booker T. Washington next week.

“Hopefully the message at end of the game got through to them,” Brown said. “It’s all about your preparation. When you have a bad week of practice, that’s going to show up on Fridays.”
