Two top-ranked teams fall in LSWA polls

Two top-ranked teams in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association statewide polls fell on Friday night with one of those victims beaten by the No. 8 team in Class 5A,  Captain Shreve, who traveled to Farmerville and dethroned Class 3A’s No. 1 team, Union Parish, in a 31-21 Gators win.

Shreveport Bossier Journal teams were 1-1 against No. 1 teams as Haughton lost 35-3 on the road at Class 2A’s top-ranked Many Tigers.

Two SBJ teams that were ranked in a Top 10 faced each other as 5A No. 10 Byrd got past 2A No. 7 Calvary 14-7 on Thursday night.

Northwood, the No. 6 ranked team in 4A, beat Airline 35-28 and Huntington, ranked 10th in 4A, fell to fifth-ranked Neville 49-12.

Unranked in 5A, Benton dropped a 54-52 scorefest to 2A’s No. 3 Newman.

North Caddo, ranked fifth in 2A, stayed unbeaten with a 44-20 defeat of Bolton.

Along with Union, the other top-ranked team to lose was Zachary in 5A, faling to St. Augustine 24-20.
