Two local games kick off third week in prep football

JOURNAL STAFF

Week 3 kicks off tonight with non-district games at Lee Hedges Stadium between C.E. Byrd (2-0) and Calvary (1-1) and Independence Stadium where Red River (0-2) comes to town to face Woodlawn (0-2).

Woodlawn and Red River – both trying to get their first wins of the season and struggling to put points on the board– are meeting for the first time. While the Knights were able to move the ball last week, getting inside the five-yard-line four times, they were unable to come away with any points.

RED RIVER (0-2) vs. WOODLAWN (0-2), Independence Stadium

Series: First meeting

Last year: First meeting

Last week: Red River lost to Parkway 45-0; Woodlawn lost to Southwood 8-0

Rankings: none

Radio: none

Notable: The Knights had the ball inside the Southwood five-yard line four times on Friday night and weren’t able to come away with any points. “We have to focus on what we are doing when we get down there,” Woodlawn head coach Thedrick Harris said. “Our decision making has to be better. We have to be able to take what the defense gives us and make a play” … On the other side of the ball, Harris was pleased with nose guard Marcus Palmer. “He did a great job of taking on double teams,” Harris said. “He had seven tackles I believe and two or three of those were for a loss” … It wasn’t homecoming for Louisiana Tech Saturday night, but it was the home opener and Harris, who was a standout defensive tackle for the Bulldogs in the early 1990s, was able to make his way to Ruston and support his alma mater. While there, he was able to spend time with defensive teammate Matt Massey and visit his defensive line coach Ed Jackson, who is still on the LA Tech athletic staff … While Woodlawn has struggled to finish drives and put points on the board, they will find that they are not alone Thursday night. Their opponent, Red River, has been held scoreless for eight quarters in games in against District 1-5A opponents Haughton (35-0) and Parkway.
