Airline wins first-round softball playoff game on road

Freshmen Lindsey Marcinskus’ sacrifice fly to centerfield put Airline ahead 5-4 in the seventh inning and the Lady Vikings added a run on a walk to defeat Chalmette 6-4 in the first round of the LHSAA Class 5A softball playoffs in Chalmette.

Airline (19-12) entered the seventh inning trailing 4-3 but tied the game on a Paige Marshall bases-loaded single. Marcinkus’ fly ball scored Jina Baffuto who had reached by a single. An intentional walk to Natalie Sutton loaded the bases and Aleena Duran walked to bring in an insurance run and a 6-4 lead for Airline.

Sutton staked the Lady Vikings to a 3-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second inning and a solo blast in the fourth.

Chalmette (20-7), the 14th seed in the 5A bracket, tied the game with three runs in the fifth and took a 4-3 lead on a solo home run in the sixth.

Duran got the win in relief of Emily Rachal, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two for Airline, the No. 19 seed in the bracket.

Elena Heng and Marshall joined Sutton with two hits each for Airline, who will host the winner of No. 3 Walker and No. 30 Southwood in the second round.

St. AMANT 15, CAPTAIN SHREVE 0:The Lady Gators from Shreveport ran into a buzzsaw in falling to the No. 2 Lady Gators in St. Amant Saturday in a run-rule game in three innings. The visiting Shreve girls finished the season at 16-15.

Monday’s local playoff slate has only one game in Shreveport with No. 7 Northwood (16-10) playing host to No. 26 New Orleans Military & Maritime (9-17) in a Class 4A first round game. 

Playing road games in Class 5A will be  No. 32 Parkway (9-13) at No. 1 Pineville (31-2) and No. 30 Southwood (19-9) at No. 3 Walker (28-4). One Class 4A matchup has No. 20 Huntington (10-6) traveling to No. 13 North Vermilion (9-13).
