In a match spread over two weeks between two of the best golf teams in the state, Byrd rallied from a three-stroke deficit to defeat Loyola Thursday in a match billed as Drivin’ Down Line.

In the final phase, the 18-hole match played at Southern Trace in windy conditions, James Holtzclaw led Byrd with a 70 and was followed by Grant Reagan (77), Shep Smith (78) and Campbell Gosslee (78).

Loyola had led by three strokes after the nine-hole match at Querbes Park that opened the event. In the 18-hole match, Connor Cassano shot 74, Jack Gilmer had a 77, Charlie Bell (who had the low score at Querbes with a 33), shot 79 and Jack Lauve had an 80.

Byrd (Division I) and Loyola (Division III) will be among the favorites in their divisions at the state tournament in Lafayette in three weeks.
